EDITORIAL: Conservatives divided is a Liberal win
American humourist Will Rogers once joked: “I am not a member of any organized political party. I am a Democrat.”
Today, the same can be said of Canada’s Conservatives.
On Monday, it was (now former) Conservative Sen. Denise Batters proving the point.
She urged Conservatives to sign a petition calling for a non-confidence vote on O’Toole’s leadership by June 30, 2022, saying, “because Erin O’Toole turned his back on conservative principles, lost the election and cannot win the next one, Conservatives must take action now!”
Strangely, Chen also criticized O’Toole for denouncing the actions of China’s dictatorial government.
Strange because criticism of China’s dictators for their unjust incarceration of Canada’s two Michaels, genocide of its Muslim minorities, deceptiveness in the COVID-19 pandemic and threats against Taiwan are mainstream Conservative views.
O’Toole’s policy favouring vaccinations or frequent testing for COVID-19, as opposed to vaccine mandates, was undermined by Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu, spokesperson for what she said was the Conservatives’ civil liberties caucus.
Gladu had to apologize for what she described as spreading misinformation about the severity of the pandemic and the safety and efficacy of vaccines, after being reprimanded by O’Toole.
