CARBON THINKING

Re “Less gas, or just hot air?” (Lorrie Goldstein, March 29): Goldstein writes Canada’s emissions were 588 million tonnes in 1988 rising to 730 million tonnes in 2019, an increase of 24%. Canada’s population in 1988 was approximately 27 million growing to 38 million by 2019. Accounting for Canada’s population growth, emissions decreased from approximately 22 tonnes per person to 19 tonnes, a decrease of about 15%. You cannot set goals to lower total emissions and increase the population at the same time. The people in charge of this Ponzi scheme ignore these facts. Canadians purchase new houses and cars. New houses come with new furnaces, windows, building materials. New cars come with improved fuel-efficient engines. Today, most Canadians use less energy and emit fewer CO2 emissions than they did in 1988. New and better technology is responsible, not big government programs. Tell us, Justin Trudeau, what exactly have you done to reduce your carbon footprint? I’m 100% against carbon taxes. They stack an additional tax burden onto the middle class and the working poor. They have little to no effect on the wealthy. Technology reduces carbon emissions, not taxes and big government programs.

(You have really got to the heart of the issue. Canada continues to grow in population, and do the Liberals expect that newcomers will be carbon-neutral? It’s ridiculous and laughable)
