PAY THEM THEIR FAIR SHARE
Over the past few years, we have witnessed the federal government paying millions of dollars to individuals with questionable reputations, as a result of federal mistakes. The two Michaels, with impeccable reputations, spent more than two years in Chinese prisons as a result of another bungled decision by our government, yet we see no financial restitution. Why? Why are they not being compensated for suffering for months on behalf of Canada? No one, including the Liberal government, will begrudge them fair compensation.

Re “Scottish school follows Spain’s example for Wear A Skirt To School Day” (Lz Braun, Nov. 8): Homophobia should not be tolerated anywhere, especially in our schools. As a student, it is heartbreaking to know the bullying that fellow classmates and peers go through simply because they are a part of the LGTBQ+ community. A person should never be judged or discriminated against because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or simply how they dress. Hearing about Mikel Gomez’s story is truly heartbreaking. A student should never be expelled let alone punished at all for wearing a skirt to school. In my opinion, schools should not have any say over a student’s choice of clothing. Allowing schools to have this judgment has allowed homophobic ideals to enter our school systems, which is unacceptable. I believe that what schools in Spain and now Castleview Primary school in Scotland are doing is a big step in the right direction. ‘Wear A Skirt To School Day’ is a brilliant idea that promotes equality, the fact clothes have no gender, and standing up to homophobic bullying. This should be a day in schools across the globe as it is a great way to teach people about the impacts homophobic bullying can have on an individual as well as to spread awareness about issues faced by the LGTBQ+ community. This day creates a safe environment where students can express themselves freely with no fear of being judged, a space where they can be who they are.
