Classical music review: An evening of total theatre

Gregory Maqoma’s Broken Chord

When: Performances continue Feb. 24-25, 8 p.m.

Wherer: Vancouver Playhouse, 600 Hamilton St., Vancouver

Tickets and info: dancehouse.ca

In a unique cooperative endeavour, Dance House and Vancouver New Music sponsored the first Canadian performance of Gregory Maqoma and Thuthuka Sibisi’s Broken Chord in a three-night run at the Vancouver Playhouse. Cooperation and collaboration extended beyond the joint presenters. This astonishing performance ran just over an hour, but was crammed with telling detail. Maqoma and a quartet of singer/dancers shared the stage with members of the Vancouver Chamber Choir in a unique blend of dance/song/sound design and spoken word.
