Fire in forested Burnaby area leads to one death

Burnaby RCMP say one person has died in a structure fire in forest near Byrne Creek.

Police spokesperson Cpl. Mike Kolanj said police were called to the area around Southridge Drive and Byrnepark Drive at around 10:45 a.m. Thursday where a structural fire had occurred.

Kolanj said police and emergency services located a deceased person inside a structure (which has not been fully identified).

The intersection — between the Edmonds SkyTrain station and the Byrne Creek ravine — has forest on three corners, and a commercial building on the northeast corner.

Kalanj said that arson investigators were working with police and a coroner. No special agencies (like the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team) have been called in.
