Gogo Penguin brings its chilly dance jazz grooves to Vancouver’s Hollywood Theatre
After blowing away audiences at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, U.K. trio Gogo Penguin returns to Vancouver on May 1 for a show at the Hollywood Theatre. Tickets to the 7 p.m. show from $42.50 are available at ticektweb.ca.
Known for its fusing of EDM grooves with tight, angular improvisations, the Manchester crew of pianist Chris Illingworth, double bassist Nick Blacka and drummer Jon Scott released its latest album, Everything Is Going to Be OK, on Sony/XXIM last week.
After a tumultuous few years that included a temporary breakup, the new album finds the players in a somewhat more pensive and expansive mood as on the debut single and title track.
Anyone who thinks that jazz music isn’t their thing would be advised to give this gig a tryout. The band has deservedly won a wide fanbase across ages and tastes.
Part of the reason are the intense live performances, where they can almost morph into computer-like precision while still swinging hard.
