What better way to start a Jewish arts and culture festival, and a live return to same, than with the Marx Brothers’ 1935 comedy classic A Night at the Opera?
Following the pandemic blip of the past year, Chutzpah! is back with an almost-full slate for its 21st edition. This year’s festival spans comedy, dance, theatre, mixed media, and music, and both returning and new artists.
“Part of my goal last year was to create some continuity and bring back some artists who people had gotten to know previously, and introduce some we wanted to work with going forward,” said Gutteridge.
A former copyright and trademark lawyer turned theatre and arts administrator, she took over the role of managing artistic director from Mary-Louise Albert just as the COVID alarm was starting to sound.
“Because we didn’t know what was in store for us when we started planning, I started local. I knew that at least I could get Vancouver-based artists into my space. And I had a theatre that had to be empty of an audience.”
