Surrey man facing murder charge in Chinatown stabbing: VPD

A 30-year-old Surrey man has been charged in the stabbing death of a man in Vancouver’s Chinatown last month.

Vancouver police say Jaal Routh Kueth is facing a second-degree murder charge after Nikolai Sugak, 32, was fatally wounded just after midnight on Feb. 6.

Sugak was found gravely injured near West Pender and Carrall streets after being stabbed in nearby Shanghai Alley. He walked out into the street and collapsed, and died shortly after.

“This violent offence caused significant concern about crime and public safety in the neighbourhood,” said VPD Const. Tania Visintin in a statement about the arrest.

“Our homicide team worked quickly to collect key evidence that led to the arrest of the suspect, and we hope this arrest will restore a sense of ease in the area.”
