Tunnel boring machine breaks through at proposed Mount Pleasant subway station
The first of two tunnel-boring machines that began excavating for the Broadway Subway Project last fall broke through at the future Mount Pleasant Station on Monday.
The Broadway Subway Project will extend the Millennium Line from VCC-Clark Station to West Broadway and Arbutus Street and is expected to be complete in 2026. A decision has not been made on whether it will continue to UBC.
The first section — from VCC-Clark to the Great Northern Way-Emily Carr station — will be above ground. The next five stops will all be underground. Mount Pleasant is the first underground station after Great Northern Way.
Once built, the trip from VCC station to Broadway and Arbutus is expected to take 11 minutes.
According to the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the 21 columns for the guideway between VCC-Clark Station and the future Great Northern Way-Emily Carr Station are nearing completion. Excavation and construction of the station foundations continue at the Broadway-City Hall, Oak-VGH, South Granville and Arbutus station sites.
