In the same month Britain crowned a new king, the May long weekend in our part of the Commonwealth celebrates another long-lived monarch, Queen Victoria.

Like Dominion Day — which we now call Canada Day — Victoria Day has mostly lost its connections to the British Empire, though there are a few traditional celebrations linked to the royal’s birthday, such as the long-running May Day parade in Fort Langley.
