B.C. educators prepare for the ‘problems and promise’ of AI apps like ChatGPT

Students at a Vancouver high school were recently asked to use ChatGPT to do their homework for them.

The unorthodox assignment, which involved using an artificial intelligence app to answer an essay question, allowed students to see how slight variations in their questions affected the chatbot’s response, and then think critically about it.

It’s one way B.C. educators are embracing AI’s potential in the classroom, while redesigning assignments and tests to ensure students aren’t using new apps to cheat.

Vancouver school board district principal Jeff Spence said many people have a “doomsday” perspective on AI.

“I don’t have that feeling,” he said.
