Burnaby joins Vancouver, Surrey in requiring masks for all K-12 students
Burnaby is the latest school district in B.C. to require masks for students from kindergarten to Grade 3.
Following an “urgent” meeting with Fraser Health’s medical officer Wednesday night, the Burnaby Board of Education voted unanimously Thursday t o expand mask-wearing requirements to all students starting Monday, Oct. 4.
“(The medical officer’s) assurance that masks are an effective layer of protection for all students when used in concert with other health and safety measures informed the board’s decision to promptly implement this new mask requirement for K-3 students,” said the Burnaby School District in a statement.
Masks will be required for all Burnaby students in K-12 while indoors at school, unless they are exempted to do so because of medical, developmental or behavioural reasons. Staff will work with students and families about the policy, said the school district.
