Family of man killed outside Vancouver Starbucks pleads with public not to share video of knife attack
Social media companies must do more to fight an increase in graphic crime videos being shared online for clicks, says a B.C. law professor.
Several days after Paul Stanley Schmidt was killed in a knife attack on the patio of a Vancouver Starbucks, his family pleaded with people to stop sharing videos of his death.
In a Facebook post, Jessica Foxx Foto said that instead of calling police, someone filmed her stepbrother as he died and, “worse off, posted it on social media very clearly for views.”
In one video posted to Instagram but since removed, two men stand facing each other before one staggers and falls to his hands and knees.
“Man stabbed, bro, right here,” says a voice as the camera moves over the scene.
