Parents ‘shocked’ by abrupt closure of Little Sprout Preschool in Vancouver’s West End
Parents in Vancouver’s West End are scrambling to save a preschool from closing after being informed of its abrupt mid-year closure.
In a letter to parents last week, the West End Community Centre Association said it was shutting down the Little Sprout Preschool in December over staffing and enrolment problems.
“Over the last 2½ years we have multiple times required on-call, substitute staff to support our permanent staff, sometimes with very little advance notice,” said association president David Scott in the letter. “This dependency creates an unstable environment where schedule disruptions and last-minute cancellations have occurred far too often.”
He also said they had experienced a “steady decline” in enrolment, which he linked to schedule unreliability.
But Denise Ting, who has a three-year-old son attending the school, questioned this reason.
