One-third believe COVID restrictions being eased too soon: Poll

A poll by Angus Reid Institute and the CBC found that while 38% of respondents say restrictions are being removed at the right pace, 36% believe they’re being eased too quickly and 22% insist everything is happening too slowly.

More Canadians feel governments are moving too quickly to ease COVID restrictions than removing them too slowly, according to a new poll.

A poll by Angus Reid Institute and the CBC found that while 38% of respondents say restrictions are being removed at the right pace, 36% believe they’re being eased too quickly and 22% insist everything is happening too slowly.

“These data help to underline an emerging trend as governments shift responsibility to Canadians to decide which health measures to continue to follow,” said the pollster in a press release.

The poll found 73% of respondents support the continuation of mask requirements in public spaces, while 64% are behind having to continue to show proof of vaccination at restaurants and theatres.

The poll says 64% will continue with hand sanitizing and washing, three-in-five will still social distance, 53% will avoid large crowds and 50% will continue to wear a mask in public.

“While official requirements may soon no longer be in place, many are ready to continue with the habits they have formed over the past two years,” added the pollster.

As for how our leaders have handled the pandemic, 48% say Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has done a good job while another 48% say he did a bad job.

In breaking down the support, the poll found 88% of those who voted Liberal in past praised Trudeau, as did 67% of people who voted NDP.

Not surprisingly, 84% of those who voted Conservative and 62% of past Bloc voters say he did badly.

Closer to home, 56% say they fought with either a close friend or family member about vaccination since the pandemic began.

Conducted March 1-4, the Angus Reid Institute, with the CBC, surveyed 2,550 Canadian adults online. The poll has a margin of error of 2%, 19 times out of 20.
