When I started to cry he stroked my hand and made me swoon: Dating Diaries
Grace is 25, works in fashion and the hospitality industry, and lives in Dundas West. She describes herself as “a pale blond giraffe” and says her personal style is influenced by “angels, fairies, Burning Man, British raves, the Grateful Dead, the ’90s and ’00s, and off-duty models.” Grace says she is “too smart for my own good; down-to-earth but a little wild; the ‘mom’ of one group of friends and the ‘little sister’ in another.” Grace likes “horses, romance novels, old movies, making scrapbooks, everything makeup and hair, fashion, crafting, DIY interior decorating, long conversations sitting on the floor drinking wine or tea, caring for my plants, and staying up all night and watching the sunrise.”
I met Jordan at my job. We both worked for the same company but didn’t see each other very much. He had killer hair with thick curls and spirals, and some facial piercings and was really cute. He acted more serious and mature than some of the other guys there.
I noticed that he was making sure to talk to me and have fun with me. We were in a group chat and texted on the side, too. We started talking more and more and I always tried to figure out when he was working. We hung out a few times after work and then I went to my home province for about a week. When I was back he said we should get dinner together on our next night off.
I asked him if we could go to one of my favourite restaurants. At that time I had only been there once, but I was totally in love with it. There were gigantic green plants hanging everywhere and climbing up the walls. It transported you somewhere else and made me feel like I was in a movie. The food was so delicious, too.
It was really hot that day so I wore a short white sundress that has a short, floating cape. I’m six feet tall and Jordan isn’t that tall so I wore pale pink ballet flats even though I like wearing heels to be as tall as possible. Jordan was wearing a white polo shirt that looked amazing on him. I laughed about how we both wore white. We looked like a pair of angels together! He was so cute. His curls were falling down his forehead and he has an incredible smile. I loved simply walking through the restaurant with him. His walk was very confident.
Jordan and I were given a good table on the patio. The sun was going down and it was stunningly beautiful. We ordered cocktails and a selection of dishes to try. I loved that he was adventurous and had no problem asking me what I wanted and ordering for us.
There is an important detail about the weeks before dinner with Jordan: I had been home with my family to help out and be present during a family emergency. I had gone straight back to work the night I got home and didn’t have any time by myself to breathe or even think, and that went on for a few days of work, work and work. So by the time our dinner rolled around I had been holding in those feelings for days and they were stuck inside of me.
When our drinks came to the table the conversation became more serious when Jordan asked where I went on my time off and I told him I’d gone home to be with family. I started crying. At first I tried to hide my tears behind my hair and let it fall around my face, but I decided to just let it out. I didn’t want Jordan to think it was his fault or that I was depressed so I told him some of what had been going on in my life and he totally understood. He reached over and stroked my hand and said it was good to cry and that I should let it out. I ended up laughing at myself since I felt like I was causing a scene.
I was awestruck that he was so sweet about it. He was so sensitive. The combination of his cool demeanour and his loveliness made me nearly swoon! I decided to put away my tears for the rest of the night.
