Letters to the Editor: Oct. 30
Retired Maj. G.G.A Mardling, and retired chief warrant officer L.B.A Harding, both of Chatham, and retired Lt. G.A.A Eagleson, of Ridgetown, are to be congratulated for their excellent letter to the editor Defend the military or risk defending oneself (Oct. 23).
To begin, they are to be thanked for their service.
Our rights and freedoms cannot be taken for granted.
My mother was born and raised in Belgium. Belgium, founded in 1830, has rights guaranteed under its constitution.
What appalls me is the “opportunistic political expediency” so well explained in the Oct. 23 letter.
How much military service have critics of our Canadian military and our senior commanders performed?
As to Afghanistan, our initial mission had been to take down the training camps of Osama Bin Laden, lest we forget what happened on Sept. 11, 2001 and the terrorist attacks by al-Qaida.
Did we make a mistake in staying in Afghanistan beyond that point?
If yes, it has to be our political leaders to account for those decisions not our military.
Let’s support our troops. They deserve no less from us.
