B.C. rest areas, park-and-rides fill with people who can’t afford a home

Glen Henderson has had a run of bad luck.

He sold his home during the pandemic and was priced out of the market. He lost money in a scam involving a friend. He battled depression.

“And this is where I am now,” he said Thursday, standing outside his camper at the Cole Road rest area in Abbotsford.

Despite a job installing siding, he couldn’t find a place to live. Eventually, he packed what he could into his truck-camper and hit the road.

“Living here felt awkward at first,” he said. “You feel bad, but that goes away. You get used it.”
