East Vancouver tenants facing ‘demoviction’ want same protections as those on Broadway corridor
East Vancouver tenants facing eviction from their homes to make way for a new building with triple the units and higher rents are asking that the city provide all tenants the same protections as those displaced along the Broadway subway corridor will get.
Rebecca Love is among 25 tenants who expect to lose their homes in a building near Oxford and Templeton streets. She and her daughter have lived in the two-storey townhouse with a finished basement since late 2019.
“If we had known this was coming, we wouldn’t have moved in here,” said Love, who is a member of the Vancouver Tenants Union, which is protesting a rezoning application for the site to allow the redevelopment.
“We were ‘demovicted’ once before and we’ve moving around a lot,” said Love. “I’m in my 40s now and this was going to be it (the last move) for a long time.”
Love chose the location because it had been renovated in 2018, which she thought meant it was stable.
