Kitsilano Showboat in Vancouver badly damaged by fire
For over 80 years — through wars, king tides and COVID-19 — the Kitsilano Showboat amphitheatre has survived and never missed a season.
Now supporters and fans are hoping the showboat can rebuild after a fire broke out in the building adjacent to Kitsilano Pool shortly after midnight on Saturday morning. Although the stage area is intact, the blaze destroyed the back of the theatre and crucial electrical equipment.
The Kitsilano Showboat Society is determined that the show will go on.
“We are struggling with this, and all the ramifications that go with it, and wondering what the season is going to look like,” said Barry Leinbach, president of the Kitsilano Showboat Society and the facility’s longest-serving volunteer.
Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services Assistant Chief Jarret Gray said that over 30 firefighters attended the blaze.
