Petition to recall B.C. Premier David Eby fails
The petition to recall B.C. Premier David Eby has failed.
The NDP Vancouver-Point Grey MLA was hit with a recall petition by Salvatore Vetro on Jan. 17, and it needed to be submitted to Elections B.C. by Monday.
The petitioners failed to do so. Elections B.C. reported 271 voters registered as canvassers for the campaign.
A Twitter account called Community Over Convoys posted a video over the weekend of a recall representative announcing the campaign’s failure. He said despite 116 active canvassers and 80 volunteers, only 2,738 people signed the petition. It would have needed 16,449 signatories — six times that number — to succeed.
Elections B.C. said there have been 29 recall campaigns since the Recall and Initiative Act was passed in 1995, but none has succeeded. One remains active against Liberal Peace River North MLA Dan Davies, with a submission deadline of April 4.
