World Cup: Qatar 2022 fan village drawing Fyre Fest comparisons
Vancouver soccer fan Gregor Young was very frank posting to social media about the chaotic scene he was witnessing trying to check into the Free Zone Fan Village in Qatar on Monday.
“Gong show,” he posted publicly. Privately, his language was no doubt stronger.
With thousands of fans descending on the principality and hotel rooms at a premium, tournament organizers have set up a series of vast fields of temporary accommodations, converting shipping containers into small sleeping quarters, complete with beds, showers and small air conditioners.
But what fans are showing up to see, so far, is less than advertised.
According to Young, he and many other fans are discovering that the rooms they’d booked and paid for aren’t available. In Young’s case, he was told the room has already been given away.
