Canadian country-folk music icon Ian Tyson dies
Alberta troubadour Ian Tyson, a Canadian country and folk music legend, has died at the age of 89, his family has confirmed.
The singer-songwriter, best known for his song Four Strong Winds, which underlined his indelible connection with Alberta, died at his ranch southwest of Calgary on Thursday following ongoing health struggles.
He performed the song at the opening ceremonies of the Calgary 1988 Winter Olympic Games at McMahon Stadium.
In a Twitter tribute, Alberta country star Paul Brandt said the song was the first he’d ever played, noting he ended up performing with Tyson.
“He kept country music and its artisans honest. Authentic to the core. Thankful we crossed trails this side of the Great Divide,” said Brandt.
