Container ship in English Bay has spilled fuel, says Canadian Coast Guard
Government agencies and First Nations are working to contain a fuel spill from a container ship anchored in English Bay.
The MV Europe is one of about a dozen container ships anchored in the bay waiting for an opening to dock. It began leaking fuel on Saturday. The coast guard estimates about 60 to 100 litres of fuel has formed a slick in the waters off Vancouver.
Canadian Coast Guard personnel are working both from the air to monitor the slick and on the water to “aggressively” contain the spill.
An update on the Canadian Coast Guard’s official social media accounts says a boom was put in place around the ship on Saturday “and no further releases of fuel have been detected.
“We continue to work with the ship’s owners and our response partners to respond to this incident.”
