Douglas Todd: The crumbling of Vancouver’s wealthy Point Grey Village
The Safeway. Gone. The Starbucks. Gone. The Tim Hortons. Gone. The Vancity Credit Union. Gone.
Three women’s clothing stores. Three bookshops. More than half-a-dozen European-cuisine restaurants. A butcher. A cinema. A laundry. A pub. A children’s toy store.
Point Grey Village is located just outside the entrance to the University of B.C., which is host to 60,000 students and about 15,000 faculty and staff.
It once formed the heart of one of the most sought-after, leafy neighbourhoods in Canada. A decade ago this three-block stretch of West 10th Ave. was thriving with families, students and eclectic, independent shops.
