New Canada Workers Benefit payment coming tomorrow to eligible Canadians
Eligible Canadians will start getting some extra cash tomorrow with the first of three advance payments of the 2023 Canada Workers Benefit going out to more than four million workers.
The benefit, which tops up earnings of low- and modest-income working Canadians, will provide up to $2,616 for families and up to $1,518 for single workers, with the amounts based on income reported in the previous year’s tax return, said Finance Canada.
Instead of waiting until next year when they’ve filed their 2023 tax return, recipients can expect to get up to 50 per cent of the benefit in their pockets sooner, with the first advance payment coming July 28.
As part of an “enhanced” Canada Workers Benefit, the federal government expanded eligibility in 2021 to an additional one million workers. It also allowed for automatic advance payments, which the government says is part of other measures it has implemented to ease rising costs of living for Canadians, including the Canada Child Benefit, reduced child care costs, and a one-time grocery rebate.
