New Westminster’s Waffle House is relocating — memories of Susan Chew’s work and life there
A sign in front of The Waffle House on Sixth Street in New Westminster said it had been serving homemade food since 1954.
The old-school diner served all-day breakfast classics like waffles, pancakes and omelettes. Entrees for seniors included Salisbury steak and grilled liver. They came with Jell-O or rice pudding.
“Your coffee is always full here,” said Travis Simpson, who started coming in years ago with his grandma. “This is the same place it was when I was a kid.”
The restaurant is a popular hangout for seniors and a go-to-spot for twentysomethings after a big night out, customers say.
“I’m in Downtown Vancouver now, which is lovely, but this makes me feel kind of like I’m home. It feels like small-town Saskatchewan,” said Teal Fiddler, who came in with Simpson for her first visit.
