Pedestrian dies in New Westminster after being struck by semi-truck

A pedestrian was killed in New Westminster on Sunday afternoon after being struck by a semi-truck.

According to New Westminster Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Andrew Leaver, police were called to the 100-block of East Columbia Street in the downtown area at 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 19 with reports a pedestrian had been struck.

Leaver said that when emergency services arrived the pedestrian was unresponsive and subsequently died.

“This is a tragic event and our thoughts are with the family of this individual,” Leaver said. “We have a large team of investigators working together to determine how this happened, but we are still in the early stages at this point.”

Leaver did not say whether the truck driver stayed at the scene.
