Vancouver’s efforts to remove DTES tent city residents “a violation of human rights”: advocate

Jason Rondeau was asleep Wednesday when his girlfriend burst into their tent to wake him up.

“You gotta get up, the city’s here, they’re gonna throw away our shit,” he said she told him.

Outside, around a dozen VPD officers were gathered along a stretch of East Hastings street along with city staff, according to Randy Cohar, Rondeau’s girlfriend.

City bylaw officers had come by about an hour before, Cohar said, and told her to start packing up their belongings, which included a tent, a storage bin, some camping chairs, various personal items and more.

“They told me I had an hour, pretty much, to pack it all up and get it moveable,” Cohar said she was told.
