The annual shortlist for the City of Vancouver Book Award was announced this past week.

The six books on the finalist list range in genres but share in their focus on the city’s social and cultural issues.

In existence since 1989, the award wasn’t given out in 2020 so this year’s event will honour two authors and their books. The winners will be announced at a hybrid (online and live) event on Nov. 20, and each will receive a $3,000 cash prize.

Hilary Atleo, Chris Lee and Shazia Hafiz Ramji chose the shortlist which follows: Five Little Indians, by Michelle Good; Chinatown Through a Wide Lens: The Hidden Photographs of Yucho Chow, by Catherine B. Clement; Francine Cunningham’s On/Me; The East Side of it All, by Joseph Dandurand; Vancouver for Beginners, by Alex Leslie; and Danny Ramadan’s and Anna Bron’s Salma the Syrian Chef.
